Ecuador Fuel Subsidy Cost Estimated At USD 650M Over Three Months
Ecuador's fuel-price band still leaves a large fiscal cost on the table.
An estimate from the president of the National Chamber of Fuel Distributors puts state spending on Extra, Ecopaís, and diesel subsidies at approximately USD 650 million between May and July 2026.
Monthly Estimate
The estimate breaks down as USD 190 million from April to May, USD 220 million from May to June, and USD 240 million from June 11 to July 11.
Price-Band Mechanics
Under the current band, fuel prices cannot rise by more than 5% per month and can fall by up to 10% per month.
At one point, Extra gasoline had a public price of USD 3.31 per gallon while the estimated real cost was USD 4.33, leaving a difference of USD 1.02 per gallon.
Petroecuador data cited for July showed a subsidy of USD 0.439 on Extra, USD 1.06 on Ecopaís, and USD 1.602 on premium diesel, with premium diesel priced at USD 3.25.
Business Relevance
For transport, distribution, and consumer-facing companies, the question is whether fuel-price smoothing becomes a predictable operating assumption or a fiscal variable that changes with international prices.
