WTI Passes USD 86 as Middle East Escalation Reaches Oil Markets

West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the benchmark that serves as a reference for Ecuador’s oil market, began August 31, 2026 up 3.2%, above USD 86 per barrel.

At 08:00 Ecuador time, the reported price was USD 86.07 per barrel. The move came as renewed attacks and announced retaliation intensified concerns about interruptions to maritime traffic and crude supply.

The Ecuador channel

The first-order signal is market exposure, not an automatic forecast for Ecuador’s fiscal position or next fuel-price adjustment. WTI provides a reference point, but the effect on Ecuador depends on production, export realization, transport, refining, and the country’s administered pricing framework.

For operators, the relevant watch is the transmission chain: whether the price move persists, whether shipping and supply disruptions become concrete, and whether Ecuador’s domestic fuel system changes in response. The current report establishes the market move and the risk context; it does not establish a new Ecuadorian fuel price or a production forecast.
