Ecuador Opens $39.24M Tanicuchí Transmission System In Cotopaxi
Ecuador has inaugurated the Tanicuchi Transmission System in Cotopaxi, adding a new node to the national transmission network at a reported cost of $39.24 million.
The project is designed as a 230/138 kV system with 150 MVA of capacity. Authorities said it will benefit 487,919 inhabitants and support residential and industrial demand in Cotopaxi and the north-central region.
Project Scope
The system includes a 230 kV transmission connection of 4 km, double circuit, 1,200 ACAR; a 138 kV connection of 10 km, double circuit, 750 ACAR, with initial mounting of one circuit; and the Tanicuchi 230/138 kV substation, 2x75 MVA.
The project was delivered on July 1 by President Daniel Noboa, with Environment and Energy Minister Juan Carlos Blum and Celec manager Antonio Jacome present.
Financing And Program Context
The funding mix includes the Inter-American Development Bank, JICA, Celec EP resources and fiscal funds. The administration framed the project within $274 million of electricity-infrastructure investments across 12 provinces.
What To Watch
The relevant question is whether individual transmission additions reduce operational fragility before the next dry season. Investors should track project energization performance, Cotopaxi industrial-load reliability and whether the broader 12-province investment package moves on schedule.
