CAN Countries Discuss Single Andean Sky After 40M International Passengers in 2024
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru are evaluating a single Andean sky proposal aimed at improving regional air connectivity and reducing costs.
The initiative was discussed at the IV Andean Air Transport Forum, held in Quito.
Passenger Base
| Indicator | 2024 figure |
|---|---|
| International passengers through Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru airports | 40 million |
| Passengers traveling between Andean countries | 6.47 million |
| Intra-Andean share of total international traffic | 16.2% |
The proposal is being framed as a way to modernize regulation and increase competitiveness in the aviation sector.
Policy Objective
Ecuador Vice Foreign Minister Alejandro Dávalos said the proposal seeks to build an integrated subregional market that reduces costs, improves connectivity, facilitates the movement of people and strengthens economic, tourism and cultural integration among the countries.
CAN Secretary General Gonzalo Gutiérrez said the intra-Andean passenger figure has improved, but more can still be done to promote connectivity among Andean countries.
Business Relevance
For airlines, airports and tourism operators, the relevant issue is whether the proposal moves from forum language into regulatory alignment.
A more integrated air market could affect routes, frequencies, passenger flows and travel costs across the four-country bloc.
What to watch
- Whether CAN members publish a formal roadmap after the Quito forum.
- Whether regulatory modernization includes route-rights changes or cost reductions.
- Whether intra-Andean passenger traffic grows beyond 6.47 million.
- Whether Ecuadorian airports gain additional regional connections under the proposal.
