EV Sales Reach 3,124 Units in Jan-April as BYD Yuan Pro Enters Ecuador's Top Five Models
Electric vehicles are becoming a material segment of Ecuador's new-vehicle market.
Market Share
Expreso reports that Ecuador registered 50,672 new vehicles sold in the first four months of 2026. Of that total, 3,124 units were 100% electric vehicles, equal to 6.17% of the market.
The article compares that with 0.21% market share four years earlier.
The Chamber of the Ecuadorian Automotive Industry, Cinae, reported that the 3,124 EV units sold so far this year represented growth of more than 240% compared with 917 units in the same period last year.
Top-Five Model Entry
Expreso reports that a fully electric model entered Ecuador's top five overall vehicle rankings:
| Rank detail | Units |
|---|---|
| Kia Soluto LX | 3,928 |
| Chevrolet Groove LTZ | 1,996 |
| Kia Sonet AC | 1,268 |
| Chevrolet D-Max HI Ride | 1,148 |
| BYD Yuan Pro | 834 |
The BYD Yuan Pro is a compact SUV available in a 100% electric version. Expreso reports that most vehicles in the ranking come from China, with the exception of the Kia Sonet assembled in Ecuador.
Incentives and Constraints
Expreso reports that EV adoption is tied to incentives including exemption from IVA, exemption from ICE, and preferential registration cost of $10.
The limiting factors remain cost, a scarce public fast-charging network and Ecuador's electricity-supply problems tied to droughts and planning gaps, according to the report.
What to watch
- Whether EV share keeps rising after the first four months of 2026.
- Public fast-charging deployment outside Quito and Guayaquil.
- Competition between Asian brands and assembled-in-Ecuador models.
- The impact of fuel-price policy on EV payback periods.
