Ecuador concluded August with an annual inflation rate of 1.12%, according to official data. This figure positions Ecuador as the country with the lowest inflation across South America. For comparison, Venezuela's inflation reached 534.20%, Argentina's was 33.50%, and Colombia's stood at 6.24%. Other nations surpassing Ecuador's indicator include Bolivia (5.02%), Uruguay (4.55%), Brazil (4.22%), Chile (4.10%), Peru (4.06%), and Paraguay (1.50%).

On September 22, the Ministry of Economic and Productive Development stated that this annual inflation rate for August consolidates Ecuador's position as one of the economies with the greatest price stability in the region. The Ministry indicated that, within a dollarized economy, this stability reduces cost uncertainty, aids financial planning for both households and businesses, and creates improved conditions for investment. The official data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) also reflects in local sales behavior, which shows increased dynamism in household consumption.

The Ministry further noted that when sales grow in an environment of low and controlled inflation, it is primarily due to increased demand for goods and services from Ecuadorian families. The government emphasized that stable prices help households maintain their purchasing power, enable the population to plan expenses, and provide better conditions for commerce to expand.

What to watch

Observers may monitor how this reported price stability influences foreign direct investment flows into Ecuador. Additionally, the sustained impact of low inflation on consumer spending patterns and the overall growth trajectory of local sales will be key indicators. The government's ability to maintain this low inflation rate amidst regional economic fluctuations could also be a point of focus.
