Colombia Lifts Restriction On Ecuador Cargo Transport Operations
Colombia lifted a requirement affecting international ground cargo operations between Ecuador and Colombia on July 9, 2026.
What Changed
The removed rule required international goods transport operations to operate under customs control that involved changing the transport unit.
Since 2021, Ecuadorian transporters had to transfer cargo to a tractor-trailer authorized to operate in Colombian territory.
Andean Community Process
The change follows a June 15, 2026 ruling by the General Secretariat of the Andean Community. The ruling found the Colombian measure contrary to community law and gave Colombia 20 days to withdraw it.
Ecuador had filed a complaint against Colombia in February 2026, alleging noncompliance with the Cartagena Agreement and the treaty creating the Andean Community Court of Justice.
What To Watch
Watch border execution at Rumichaca and carrier operating costs. The business relevance is direct: the measure had generated additional costs for Ecuadorian transporters and affected sector competitiveness.
