Programmed Power Cuts Cover 54 Cities in 15 Provinces With User Compensation
Ecuador's electricity distributors will run scheduled maintenance outages across a large share of the country during two weekends.
Primicias reports that Energy Minister Juan Carlos Blum said the programmed cuts will occur between May 30-31 and June 6-7.
The outages will cover 54 cities in 15 of Ecuador's 24 provinces.
Scope And Timing
| Item | Figure / Detail |
|---|---|
| Weekend windows | May 30-31 and June 6-7 |
| Cities covered | 54 |
| Provinces covered | 15 of 24 |
| Outage duration | 1-4 hours |
| Climate-risk reference | 50% El Nino probability |
Blum told Radio Sucesos that simple maintenance work will take about one hour, while more complex work can take up to four hours, according to Primicias.
Primicias reports that the ministry says the work includes preventive maintenance, connection of new infrastructure, equipment repowering and modifications to existing networks.
Compensation
Primicias reports that President Daniel Noboa ordered that electricity not be charged on days with scheduled cuts, as compensation to users.
The outlet says recent electric bills already show compensation for surprise outages registered in April 2026.
Blum said most works were programmed for early-morning hours to reduce user impact, though some areas served by Empresa Electrica Quito require daytime work for technical and safety reasons.
What To Watch
- Whether distributors execute the May 30-31 and June 6-7 schedules without unplanned extensions.
- How compensation appears on bills across different distribution companies.
- Whether maintenance reduces outage risk if El Nino conditions materialize.
- Any industrial or commercial complaints from sectors with weekend production schedules.
